Social Networks are like Pubs

I received an email from Pownce this morning, letting me know that they’ve opened the doors to all! Yah! (oh, the irony)

I signed up for Pownce a couple of months ago… configured my profile, looked for a few friends … didn’t find any … now what?

At this point I’m reminded of Rob Manuel’s comment about social networks:

Social networks are pubs. There’s little reason to like Facebook if your friends aren’t there. Anyway, the music is too loud.

Obviously at the time of Rob‘s “tweet”, Facebook was only just picking up speed in the UK – now it’s THE place to be on-line (even for the non-geeks). Ringing true, because all your friends are there!

Pownce is an impressive web-app, with a nice slick interface … I’d be tempted to use it, only if I had more friends (billy-no-mates me!) – (actually I found a few now)

I found another interesting article (by Chris Brogan) about the “social networks are like pubs” analogy.

I agree with the pub analogy to the T, sir. If there were a social networking called, like, “Lee’s Pub,” or anything with Pub in the title, I would sign up in a heart beat.

Pownce is cool. I like it better than Twitter. Many people argue that they’re one in the same, but Twitter can’t do the neat things Pownce can do, “out of the box.” Twitter does have that whole SMS thing going for it, which can be cool, but I think it’s a bit annoying to get a text for every update, especially if you have more than a handful of friends on the thing. Plus, I think Twitter is more about, “What are you doing now?” when Pownce is more about sharing your wares and micro blogging.

I think I’ll start using Pownce to share small files instead of using my bandwidth for it. I need to check to see if you have to have an account to download stuff or not first.

  2. Actually I didn’t even think about the file-sharing on Pownce…

About 5 minutes ago, I wanted to email across an 8Mb ZIP file to my friend. Gmail told me that it was too big and dangerous (not the first time I’ve heard that ;-P) – because the ZIP contained an *.exe.

I didn’t want to log onto my IM because I’ve got too many people asking me when the baby is due… so I ended up going onto my FTP site, uploading the file – then emailed the link to my friend.

Now I’m thinking that maybe Pownce might come in handy… just need to convince my friend to sign-up!

  3. Oh, what the crap? I think it’s bull that I can only share files with friends. I guess they found out about my plan to use their bandwidth.

    When is the baby due?

    I kid.
